Interested in applying for LJLA's Cadet Firefighter Programme? Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about the recruitment and what we are looking for in a future Firefighter.

What area of Liverpool do I need to be from?

Due to our commitment to the local community, preference will be given to those who live in the areas surrounding Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

What age do I need to be?

You need to be a minimum of 18 years old when the Cadet Firefighter training programme begins on 30 September 2019.

Do I have to be a certain height?

There are no minimum or maximum height restrictions.

Is this a full-time job?

Yes. The hours of work are Monday to Friday 8.30am – 5.00pm whilst completing your training and you will then work 12-hour shifts on a four-on, four-off off basis.

How long will training take before I am operational?

You will be classed as an operational Cadet firefighter after you finish an eight-week training programme.

How physically fit do I have to be to become a Cadet?

You must have a good level of physical fitness to become a Cadet and you must also be fit enough to pass the Physical Tests, Fitness Tests and Medical Examination. You must also maintain this fitness level throughout your employment and you will be required to undertake a fitness test to determine your aerobic capacity which needs to be 42 VO2 Max.

I wear glasses and may have laser eye surgery will this restrict my ability to become a Cadet?

No. Wearing glasses or having had laser eye surgery is not an issue however you will be required to have a specified standard of sight. This may include being sent for a test.

How long is the Cadet programme in total?

The Cadet Programme is a 12 month placement.

Do I need to have specific qualifications to apply?

You do not need to have specific qualifications to apply, however, you must have a good basic knowledge of English and Maths and, as previously mentioned, a good level of fitness.

What experience, if any, must I have in order to be a successful applicant?

You do not need to come from a specific background but ideal candidates will be flexible, enthusiastic, driven and the ability to work well within a team.  Ideal candidates will also have excellent organisational and communication skills with the capacity to problem solve and work under pressure.

What will my salary be?

Your salary will be £18,468.56 per annum.

Do I need to have a driving license to be able to complete the cadet programme?

A driver’s license is desirable but not necessary.
