EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
• There are no laid down education requirements.
• Experience in aviation firefighting is desirable for new employees, although in some circumstances people are employed and given basic training.
MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Physically fit and healthy – A medical will be undertaken to national fire service standards.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide an immediate response to emergencies at the airport.
• Deploy equipment at emergencies.
• Ensure safety of those involved in an emergency and to minimise other risks.
• Undertake station duties to maintain operational readiness of equipment and personnel.
• Preserve evidence at emergencies to support the investigation process.
• Comply with statutory, legal and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain personal discipline, performance and behaviour to the highest standard.
• Support the development of new employees.
• Clean, inspect and test vehicles and equipment.
• Undertake any other duties necessary to maintain the airport operations.
ANY OTHER INFORMATION/REQUIREMENTS
• Prepared to work shifts (12 hour shifts from 0700-1900 hrs).
• Shift pattern is 2 day shifts followed by 2 night shifts with 4 days off.
• Prepared to work overtime if required.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY INVOLVE
• A typical day on the fire station involve starting at 0700hrs with equipment and vehicle checks, the results of these are then recorded on electronic systems.
• Mornings will then consist of testing equipment, cleaning vehicles and undertaking training and assessments.
• Afternoons will consist of additional training and physical sessions to maintain fitness. The day will continue with cleaning of the station and vehicles.
• Additional work will include third party training which might be fire awareness, fuel spill training or first aid training.
• All of these activities could be interrupted at any time with emergency calls to aircraft, fuel spills, medical emergencies, special services to any other type of emergency.
• Then at 1800 hrs it’s preparing the station and vehicles for watch handover to the oncoming night crew.
