Why you should go
Rhodes has long been a popular destination for British tourists, and with opportunities to sunbathe on sandy beaches under ancient ruins, traditional tavernas and a lively nightlife, it's not surprising that almost two million tourists flock to this island every year. For history buffs, the Old Town in the City of Rhodes is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and its maze of cobbled streets will take you back to the days of the Byzantine Empire and beyond. Families can enjoy the beaches of Lindos, and the waterpark in Faliraki is always a winner with the kids.
The ancient Acropolis of Lindos sits high on a rock above the beach town of Lindos, with a steep footpath winding its way up and offering stunning views of the sea and settlement below. This archaeological site is made up of many layers of history. The imposing battlements were built by the knights of St John, while the second level boasts of remains of a temple built in 300 BC and the sanctuary on the upper-level dates from 4th century.
When you should go
Being one of the most southern islands in Greece, Rhodes has a longer season than most of the other islands. Traditionally, the season starts in April and ends in November, but the Old Town is open all year and the weather can still be pleasant during the winter months. It is worth taking note that in the winter there are fewer ferries between the islands and you will need some strong sea legs to manage the crossing. In summer, especially in June or July, the mercury can reach a balmy 30 degrees or more.
Where you should stay
If you want to be in the heart of the history then a room in one of the Old Town restored inns is where you want to be. Looking for sea, sun and the legendary nightlife? Then take a look at the luxury resorts near Faliraki or Lindos. If you want to get away from it all and enjoy a bit of privacy you can rent a villa – most will come with a private swimming pool.
- The island’s natural beauty – escape from the tourists and drive through the centre of Rhodes where you will find charming villages, and you can cool off in the beautiful Seven Springs, just a short 30km drive away from the Old Town.
- The Archaeological Museum of Rhodes – situated in a mediaeval castle used by the Knights of St John, this museum is filled with ancient finds and the spoils of long ago wars.
- Valley of the butterflies – also known as Petaloudes, this family-friendly destination is a protected reserve where you can see beautiful butterflies up close.
