Ryanair, today (Wednesday 11 July) celebrated carrying 7 million passengers through Liverpool Airport.

The lucky seven millionth passenger was Barbara Higham from Warrington.

Ryanair began operations in Liverpool in May 1988 and, since then, has expanded its services to operate to 33 destinations across 13 European countries.

Celebrating the record-breaking figures, Elaine Duff, Ryanair’s Deputy UK Marketing Manager, said: "In November 2004, Liverpool LJLA became our eleventh European base. Today, we operate thirty-three routes from Liverpool with our most recently-announced Stockholm destination which commences 31 October this year.

"Since 1988, Ryanair has been committed in bringing low fare routes to the region and today’s announcement strengthens our position as Liverpool’s largest carrier. With more flights, more choice, the lowest fares and better service than any other Liverpool-based carrier, Ryanair is undoubtedly Liverpool’s number one airline."

Liverpool’s Lord Mayor Councillor Paul Clark said: "I’m delighted to welcome Ryanair’s 7 millionth passenger today. Business and investment in Liverpool are really booming and Ryanair is definitely helping put us on the map. With so many successful companies like Liverpool John Lennon Airport around, I am delighted the city is taking off."

Robin Tudor, LJLA’s General Manager Corporate and Community Affairs, added: "Today’s celebration is a tremendous achievement. With over 200,000 passengers a month now flying with Ryanair via John Lennon Airport, milestones such as this will become a regular event.

"In recent years, its expansion here has been dramatic. At the beginning of 2002 Ryanair served just 1 destination; 5 years on it’s 33, with more hopefully to follow."
