Liverpool John Lennon Airport today announced they are gearing up for their busiest ever Christmas and New Year – with a 3% increase in passengers expected to travel compared with the same period last year.

The traditional Christmas getaway is expected to start this weekend when the majority of schools finish for the holidays and passengers head off on flights from Liverpool to seek some winter sun, visit relatives, or look for Christmas festivities across Europe.

Around 162,000 passengers are estimated to pass through the Airport over the Christmas and New Year period which will be the Airport’s busiest, thanks to a number of new destinations launched in 2007.

With over 60 destinations on offer from LJLA, the top five destinations for passengers both arriving to and departing from Liverpool this Christmas and New Year are the Irish Cities of Belfast and Dublin, winter favorite Malaga and the European cities of Paris and Amsterdam.

Andy Gower, Airport Director said: “With the huge number of affordable flights to a wide variety of destinations from Liverpool, it is becoming increasingly obvious that people are able to take more than the traditional summer holiday. The Christmas getaway from LJLA gets busier each year and as we celebrate the start of the Capital of Culture year we also look forward to welcoming thousands of inbound visitors to Liverpool over the coming year.”
