Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) in conjunction with the Liverpool Culture Company has officially unveiled its inaugural Community Arts Project.

Phil Redmond, Deputy Chair and Creative Director, Liverpool Culture Company unveiled the artwork of five local artists and 119 schoolchildren from three local schools to guests at a ceremony at LJLA.
The different pieces of artwork dotted around the public areas of the terminal include; mosaics from Debbie Ryan, a large image of Halewood by Barry Worrall and artwork from 50 schoolchildren at St Ambrose Primary School in Speke.

At the beginning of the year, LJLA worked alongside the Liverpool Culture Company and issued an ‘art call’ to local artists inviting them to display their work at the Airport. LJLA received many applications and as a consequence formed an Art Panel which consisted of representatives from LJLA, Liverpool Culture Company, Liverpool Biennial and a local artist to review all the submissions and make a selection. The work will be on display until the end of the year; however this Project is the start of a rolling programme which will continue to showcase new exhibits throughout next year.

Neil Pakey, Deputy CEO of the Peel Airports Group, said: "We are delighted to have Phil Redmond and the Liverpool Culture Company launch the Airport’s Community Arts Project especially at a time when the City is gearing up for the start of the Liverpool Biennial.

We are also pleased to be supporting the local artists by giving them opportunity to display their work to thousands of passengers and visitors and at the same time we are delighted to be showing off our local talent to European visitors."

Phil Redmond, Deputy Chair and Creative Director of Liverpool Culture Company, said: "I am delighted that JLA is providing a platform for local artists to showcase their talent to a truly international audience. To embrace art and culture throughout a public building such as LJLA is fantastic, as it vividly promotes why we are European Capital of Culture from the moment you arrive in Liverpool and right up until you depart."

The new collection of local art compliments the current display of photography and art displayed in and around the terminal building known as ‘Collection ’08. The Collection offers passengers and visitors something different to look at whilst they’re either waiting to collect family or waiting to fly out.
