If you do happen to exceed the duty free limit, you may be asked to pay tax on the additional items. If you exceed the limit by a considerable amount, you risk being arrested.

Boarding Pass & Duty Free

World Duty Free requires all passengers to show their boarding pass when purchasing products by regulation, so please have your boarding pass to hand when shopping. According to HMRC, duty-free shops can sell goods where the excise, customs duty or VAT has been suspended, usually alcohol, fragrances and tobacco. Sales in duty-free shops are tightly controlled and HMRC requires these outlets to know where the passengers are travelling to before completing a sale.
