British Tourism Week is taking place from 12th – 20th March and aims to raise local, regional, national and international awareness of the size, value and importance of Britain’s £115 billion visitor economy.

Here in Liverpool, the three Tourist Information Centres are taking part including the Information Desk team based at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. The staff from Liverpool City Council’s tourism department based at the Airport have been working tirelessly over the past few weeks to organise an event to be held in the Airport terminal building on Friday 18th March, aimed at showcasing a number of great tourism opportunities in the area.

The event is due to start at 10am with an official opening by Cllr Claire Wilner, with around a dozen local tourism attractions including Knowsley Safari Park, The Beatles Story, Speke Hall, National Museums Liverpool and both Liverpool and Everton Football Clubs exhibiting on the ground floor of the terminal. Regular entertainment will also take place including a special performance by TV stars Dance Dynamix.

A prize draw and a competition are aimed at raising awareness of British Tourism Week with children and local schools who have been invited to attend.

The event is aimed at both arriving visitors to the region passing through the Airport, as well as passengers from the North West flying out from the Airport to encourage them to make the most of the region’s tourist attractions after they return home again.

Visitors not travelling from the Airport are welcome to come along to the event too, which will be open until 4pm.
Assistant Cabinet Member for Culture and Tourism, Councillor Claire Wilner commented "The team here are keen to promote what Liverpool and the wider region has to offer for a great day out and this exhibition will give everyone visiting the Airport on Friday the opportunity to see this for themselves."

"With thousands of passengers passing through the Airport every day, we thought it would be a great chance to promote our local tourism to a captive audience."

Notes
British Tourism Week is organised by VisitBritain with the support of the Tourism Society, the Tourism Alliance, the UK’s national and regional tourist boards, and an Executive Committee comprising a number of public and private sector organisations.
