With a new route to Bulgaria’s capital city Sofia, it’s smiles all round here at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. If you’re thinking of paying this stunning city a visit, plan your trip and book your flights by clicking here.

Located to the west of the country and founded thousands of years ago, Sofia should be a must-see destination to add to your bucket list. The convenient Western European location is also a gateway to a number of other destinations such as Athens, Zagreb and Istanbul, so next time you’re booking a city break, think outside the box and see what Sofia has to offer.

To make planning your itinerary a little easier, we’ve put together our top 5 things to do in this enchanting city:

1. Take in Sofia’s streets on foot

When we tend to visit an unfamiliar city, we can often fall into the habit of spending most of our time in a taxi. Although it may sound obvious, the best way to discover Sofia’s charming streets is by going for a stroll. Make sure you check out Pirotska Street (the first pedestrian shopping street in Sofia) or stop by Central Market Hall.

2. Visit the architectural wonders of Cathedral Saint Alexandar Nevski

Although you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to religious landmarks in Sofia, stopping by Cathedral Saint Alexander Nevski is a must. As well as being the biggest church in Bulgaria, you’ll be blown away by its magnificence, both inside and out.

3. Escape from the city with a visit to Boyana Waterfall

As one of the most important natural landmarks in Sofia, the Boyana Waterfall is a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Who knew such a beautiful site could be situated an hour away from the city?

4. Learn something new at the National Institute of Archaeology Museum

Located in a former Ottoman mosque, you can study Sofia’s extensive past along with its cultural heritage at one of the largest archaeological establishments in southeast Europe.

5. Sample some traditional Bulgarian cuisine

It’s essential to try a local tavern such as Hadjidraganov's Cellars for some of the best traditional recipes in Sofia, served with a slice of live music on the side.

What are you waiting for? Pack your bags and fly to Sofia with Ryanair from Liverpool John Lennon Airport.
